Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR)

The new EU packaging regulation PPWR aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging. Among other things, it requires all packaging placed on the EU market to be recyclable by 2030. Companies must adapt the design and material use of their packaging in order to increase recycling and reuse.

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on January 22, 2025. It will enter into force 20 days after publication, i.e. on February 12, 2025, and will apply from August 12, 2026.

The law can be found in the various official languages under the following link.

Many questions arising from the ordinance cannot yet be answered definitively. To this end, so-called delegated acts and implementing acts will first be required in a process that may take several years, which will define and specify the further details of the affected articles of the regulation for all EU member states and stakeholders. We are following these developments in detail and are constantly exchanging information with a wide-ranging network.

As part of the EU’s Green Deal, the PPWR is an important milestone for the transition to a circular economy for plastics and a clear CO2 roadmap, which Jokey is also pursuing. The Jokey Eco Concept 4.0 with its 4 pillars has been focusing for years on recyclable, recyclable packaging made from secondary raw materials, particularly at product and resource level. We are therefore already well positioned with regard to the requirements of the PPWR.
