Climate and energy
Our path to a climate-friendly future
Climate-friendly transformation
From procurement to recycling
Man-made climate change is progressing noticeably. Since the beginning of industrialisation, the earth has warmed by more than 1° C (+ 1.45° C in 2023). There is scientific consensus that limiting warming to 1.5° C is imperative to avert the most serious consequences. In 2015, the international community followed the recommendations of the scientific community and enshrined this goal in the Paris Agreement. If we continue with ‘business as usual’, dramatic consequences for the environment and for humanity will ensue. In such a scenario, the plastics industry alone would be responsible for almost a fifth (19 per cent) of the total CO2 budget available in a Paris-compatible world by 2040.
The majority of these emissions are not generated during the plastic processing step, but in the upstream and downstream value chains. Nevertheless, all players in the value chain, including us as a manufacturer of plastic packaging, have a responsibility to drive forward the transformation to climate-friendly procurement, production and recycling of our products. If we continue down our current development paths, both global warming and its dramatic effects on living conditions, as well as the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, will increase drastically. At the same time, plastic packaging in particular offers great potential for reducing CO2 emissions and conserving resources if it is kept in the material cycle for as long as possible, due to its technical advantages.
What we have set out to achieve
Insight and outlook
We also base our objectives in the area of climate and environmental protection on the SDGs. SDGs 9, 12 and 13 play a central role.
In addition, the Jokey Eco Concept includes specific goals for protecting the climate and the environment, which are primarily mapped within the first three fields of action, the Eco Strategy. Jokey wants to make its contribution to a 1.5° C compatible future and is aiming for a medium-term reduction of all GHG emissions along a Paris-compatible, SBTi-validated 1.5°C path. Within our commitment to the Global Compact, we support the principles on the environment and climate, as well as our goals in the areas of recycling management and the supply chain.
With regard to our energy policy, four guidelines also shape the framework for our actions:
- the efficient use of the energy we deploy in all areas of the company
- the use and procurement of innovative and energy-efficient technologies and materials
- increasing the use of energy from renewable sources
- promoting energy-conscious behaviour among our employees, suppliers and business partners
Our measures
and projects
In addition to the above-mentioned goals in the area of climate and environmental protection, the Jokey Eco Concept also lists specific measures, particularly in the Eco Company and CO2 Roadmap 2030 Eco-Strategy fields of action. Many of these are closely linked to the areas of recycling management, supply chain and energy management.
1.5° C target
We are using our science-based 1.5°C compatible climate target for 2030 to guide our transformation path and develop effective measures to continuously reduce emissions. In November 2022, Jokey signed the Commitment Letter of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Our near-term targets, which we submitted to the SBTi in March 2023, were validated at the end of 2024.
The focus of our transformation path is on substituting primary raw materials with secondary raw materials and on achieving the most holistic circularity of materials and processes possible. It goes without saying that this includes all measures that significantly reduce our energy consumption or replace existing energy use with our own renewable energy sources.
Energy efficiency in manufacturing and building services engineering
We are continuously improving energy efficiency in all our plants, for example by using fully automatic high-bay warehouses, generating energy from waste heat from machines, and using energy-efficient manufacturing and building services engineering, as was the case with the construction of our new production facility in Spain.
Improving energy management
In this area, we continuously involve all employees, suppliers and business partners, consider the intensity of emissions as an evaluation criterion in our purchasing decisions and provide the information and resources needed to achieve our goals.
Conserving resources
We use valuable resources sparingly, avoiding environmental pollution and wasting energy. We know and optimise the energy consumption of our energy-related systems, processes and buildings. For example, in 2023 we introduced a recommendation for employees with company cars at our German locations to reduce CO2 emissions.
Planning ahead
and act responsibly
All processes and planning in the area of impact management are analysed and managed by Group Controlling. The organisational charts of each individual plant define the business allocation plan and task schedule. Coordination takes place at regular meetings such as the management circle meeting, the Group operations meeting or the sales meetings. The entire area of climate protection and environmental protection is overseen by our sustainability officer and our energy management officer.
