New circular packaging solutions for the organic dairy sector
The aim of the agreement is to promote the use of plastic packaging with ISCC Plus certification on the Spanish market that meets all food safety requirements. The three companies plan to launch new circular packaging solutions for cheese products.
The Spanish multinational Repsol has reached an agreement with the Jokey Group, a global leader in the field of rigid plastic packaging, and the Spanish organic dairy company Cantero de Letur. The aim of the agreement is to promote the use of plastic packaging with ISCC Plus certification on the Spanish market that meets all food safety requirements. The three companies plan to launch new circular packaging solutions for cheese products.
The Cantero de Letur group will pave the way for the use of recycled plastic packaging in the organic dairy industry in Spain for its cheese products. This sustainable packaging, manufactured by Jokey, uses Repsol Reciclex® circular polypropylene that has ISCC Plus certification.
The technologies used by Repsol to produce these circular resins enable the use of non-recyclable plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfill. Thus, waste becomes a new raw material for Repsol’s processes to produce new circular materials with the same quality and functionality as new resins. This makes them suitable for use in the food industry, where stringent quality and hygiene requirements apply. At the beginning of 2020, Repsol certified all its petrochemical complexes for production according to ISCC Plus. Jokey received this certification in August 2020 for four production sites, including Spain. This certification guarantees the use and traceability of recycled materials.
“In view of the developing market for new sustainable materials, the Repsol-Jokey-Cantero project is one of the first pilot projects with the purpose of demonstrating the long-term applicability of recycled plastics. Real, functioning business and material flow models will attract more partners and drive segments and the plastics industry towards a circular economy,” emphasised Michael Schmidt, Chief Procurement Officer at Jokey.
“This new alliance, which we announced today, will enable us to make further progress in our efforts to recycle the equivalent of 20 per cent of our polyolefin production. At Repsol, we are fully committed to the circular economy and have had a circular economy strategy in place since 2016. Therefore, our goal is to offer society materials that incorporate recycling, allowing end users to participate in responsible circular consumption without perceiving any change in quality,” explains Fernando Arroyo, head of polypropylene at Repsol.
“By investing in this technology, we will meet our customers‘ ongoing demand for the creation of products and packaging with the lowest possible environmental impact,” says Pablo Cuervo-Arango, CEO of Cantero de Letur.
With this alliance, the three companies are demonstrating their commitment to the environment and the circular economy, reducing the production and consumption of virgin materials and responding to consumer demand for more environmentally friendly packaging, leading to a change in a sector with high hygiene safety requirements.
