Use of solar power is part of Jokey’s sustainability strategy

Jokey is investing in the continuous improvement of energy efficiency at all its plants. In addition to fully automatic high-bay warehouses and energy generation from waste heat from machines, this also includes the use of photovoltaic systems. The use of renewable energies is one of the many measures with which Jokey intends to achieve climate neutrality in line with the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as net zero climate neutrality. The solar panels installed on a total of 3657 square metres generate their own electricity, which can cover an average of 25 percent of the electricity required for production at the Spanish site. In summer, due to the intense solar radiation at midday, it can be up to 100 percent in some cases. The 1690 panels achieve a maximum output of 768.15 kilowatt-peak (KWp).

Climate neutrality by 2030: Jokey is investing a further 500,000 euros in energy savings in Murcia

The Jokey Group has invested around 12.2 million euros in the construction of the new Spanish plant. A further half a million euros is being invested in the new photovoltaic system. “With the construction of the new photovoltaic system at our Spanish subsidiary, we are investing in further energy-saving measures,” emphasises Christof Kölschbach, CSO of the Jokey Group. “On the one hand, this means that we are consistently implementing the objectives of our sustainability strategy, as defined in the Jokey Eco Concepts 3.0. On the other hand, this investment and the associated depreciation is also a necessary reaction to be able to compensate for the sharp rise in energy costs.” Vicente Hernández, managing director at Jokey Iberica, is also satisfied: “Spain is ideal for the use of solar energy because, compared to other Jokey locations in Central Europe, the average annual number of hours of sunshine here is much higher. Thanks to the latest technical standards in production and energy efficiency, we can produce even more sustainably.” It is fitting that a mural was created at the opening ceremony in which the Jokey logo is surrounded by the 17 sustainability goals of the United Nations. The painting, which adorns the canteen, symbolises the Jokey Group’s mission and vision. “This way, all employees are constantly reminded of the sustainability course we have embarked on and its overarching goals, even in Jokey’s day-to-day business,” Hernández emphasises.

In addition to the containers from Jokey’s standard range, Jokey Iberica offers a wide range of special packaging, household products and closure solutions, thus expanding Jokey’s product portfolio.
