Jokey’s apprentices achieve great results in the BG RCI occupational safety competition
Around 2,100 apprentices from 138 companies took part in the 2021/2022 apprentice competition organised by the Berufsgenossenschaft Rohstoffe und chemische Industrie (BG RCI). Among them were apprentices from Jokey Werke Wipperfürth and Gummersbach. In a thrilling final on 23 June, the Jokey Wipperfürth team achieved a sensational 4th place.
The apprentice competition, held under the motto “Safety from the start”, is part of VISION ZERO, a BG RCI prevention strategy for a world of work without accidents and illnesses. In a 9-month challenge, apprentices learn in a fun way how to stay fit and healthy in their professional lives. The apprentices from Jokey Wipperfürth took part in the competition for the second time, while the apprentices from Gummersbach were taking part for the first time. The trainees from Wipperfürth were delighted to reach the final of the “Safety Heroes” with an outstanding performance, while the newcomers from Gummersbach did excellently in the qualification round.
The final – pure excitement and emotion
The grand final was to take place from 22–24 June in Willingen in the Sauerland region. There, the six best teams from the challenge groups competed against each other. The team from Gummersbach was of course there to cheer on the team from Wipperfürth. In an exciting and thrilling finale, the participants had to collect points in a quiz and pass practical safety exercises. “It was super exciting, we were on the edge of our seats with every question and every action,” reports Leonie Metzner, a participant and commercial trainee at Jokey SE in Wipperfürth. After an intense struggle, Jokey Wipperfürth was finally tied on points with the Spezialpapiere GmbH team, so both took 4th place. At the end of an emotionally charged final, the exhausted but happy “Safety Heroes” were showered with confetti.
“We are very proud of our apprentices‘ performance. Both teams did an excellent job and showed real team spirit,” emphasised Thomas Becker, COO of the Jokey Group. “At the same time, we are pleased to see that our training also prepares young people very well for their professional lives in terms of occupational safety.”
